Our ongoing project at Siri Mangala Dhamma School, located at Sri Vipashyarama Purana Viharaya in Maharagama, Sri Lanka, has been a significant step toward supporting the health and well-being of our community’s children. Through this initiative, we have successfully provided nutritious food donations to students, ensuring that they have access to healthy meals that support their growth and development.
One of the primary goals of this project has been to increase children's awareness of nutrition. By equipping them with knowledge about healthy eating habits, we aim to empower them to make better food choices. Additionally, we have encouraged children to engage with their parents in food preparation, fostering family bonding and the adoption of healthy cooking practices at home.
As we distributed food, we observed varying behaviors among the students, which revealed deeper issues within their families that we hadn’t previously identified. This prompted us to arrange for our mentor, Rev. Chandnanda, to speak with parents individually, providing guidance and support. These conversations allowed us to address specific concerns, and gradually, we noticed improvements in the students' mental health. The positive changes in their behavior indicated that the support extended to their families was making a difference.
Recognizing the interconnectedness of mental health among both students and parents, we supplied resources and conducted awareness sessions on various mental health issues and the different types of depression that can affect families. With the support of volunteer doctors and midwives in the area, this initiative aimed to educate both children and their parents about the signs of mental health challenges and the importance of seeking help.
The impact of our efforts has been evident in the improvements we’ve observed in students' eating behaviors and manners during meals. We have promoted a culture of health and respect, which has been embraced by the children. Furthermore, our gardening activities have provided valuable lessons on planting and nutrition, allowing students to enjoy the benefits of exercise while utilizing fresh vegetables from our temple garden.
Beyond nutrition, our project has addressed broader community needs. We recognized that many families face economic challenges, which can hinder their ability to provide for their children. In response, we have included educational support, such as extra classes and preschool arrangements, helping to improve the overall quality of education for these children. We also focus on skill identification, encouraging young participants to discover and develop their talents.
Leadership development has been another crucial aspect of our initiative. We strive to enhance leadership qualities and team discipline among the children through organized activities, instilling a sense of responsibility and community involvement. Our religious approach further reinforces values of equality and self-respect, which are essential for building a supportive community.
In addition to these efforts, we have introduced health and wellness initiatives, providing eye care and dental check-ups to ensure that our students maintain their overall health. Mental health is a priority; we promote awareness about emotional well-being, helping children understand and address feelings of excitement and depression.
We emphasize the importance of good health habits by educating students on basic needs such as proper handwashing techniques and personal hygiene practices. To foster a culture of health awareness, we encourage the habit of maintaining a medical history diary, allowing families to track their health developments over time. Our exhibitions and reading materials focus on health education, further promoting knowledge and understanding among the children.
Through this comprehensive approach, we are not only providing nutritious meals but also empowering families with the knowledge and skills necessary for a healthier lifestyle. Our commitment to this project reflects our dedication to the holistic development of our community's children and their families, and we look forward to continuing our efforts in creating a supportive and healthy environment for all.
Sri Lankan people are renowned for their generosity and kindness, consistently extending their hospitality to bridge the gaps in support for those in need. This spirit is particularly evident in our ongoing efforts to assist cancer patients, who often require essential resources for their treatment and care.
Through our charity foundation; Bandu SL, we actively promote blood donation as a critical initiative for both in-house and outpatient cancer patients across the country. Blood is a vital resource for those undergoing treatment, as many patients face severe shortages due to the nature of their illnesses. On average, individuals can donate blood every four to six months, and we are proud to have over 300 registered donors who regularly contribute. Many of them are willing to travel to various locations, ensuring that patients receive timely transfusions.
In such situations, out of every 100 occasions, the donations captured in photographs reflect one of the initiatives led by our chairman, Reverend Chandananda Thero. His unwavering commitment to this cause has inspired many, bringing together volunteers and donors to support cancer patients in their time of need.
In addition to blood donations, we address the urgent shortages of essential medications faced by many hospitals. Cancer patients often require high-cost, life-saving drugs that are not always readily available. Through our extensive network of donors and supporters, we actively communicate these needs, encouraging contributions in both kind and cash to help purchase the necessary medicines. This collective effort not only alleviates the burden on healthcare providers but also ensures that patients receive the treatment they desperately need.
Moreover, we are immensely grateful for the support from neighboring countries like India, which have shown tremendous generosity by providing rare and expensive medications. This international collaboration enhances our ability to offer comprehensive support to patients, allowing them to access treatments that can significantly improve their quality of life.
At Bandu SL, we also understand the importance of mental and emotional support for cancer patients and their families. We have initiated programs that offer counseling and support groups, creating safe spaces for patients to share their experiences and challenges. These programs not only provide emotional relief but also foster a sense of community and belonging among those affected by cancer.
Additionally, we recognize the importance of awareness and education in the fight against cancer. Our foundation is committed to conducting workshops and seminars aimed at educating the public about cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of regular health check-ups. By raising awareness, we hope to empower individuals to take charge of their health and seek timely medical attention.
Through these collective efforts, we aim to foster a culture of care and compassion in Sri Lanka. Every act of kindness, whether big or small, contributes to a larger impact, helping to ensure that individuals can lead peaceful, healthy, and happy lives. We invite everyone to join us in making a difference. Together, we can provide vital support to those battling cancer and create a brighter future for all.

In recent years, Sri Lanka’s national budget has allocated increasing funds to key areas such as national security, education, and healthcare. However, with the per capita income remaining relatively low, the financial provisions for the health sector often fall short of meeting the growing demand. Recognizing this pressing need, our organization stepped in with a proactive solution: supplying dry rations to rural hospitals and major specialized healthcare facilities.
To implement this initiative effectively, we partnered with the local business community at the district level. Their generous contributions of quality dry rations are essential for ensuring that hospitals can meet the nutritional needs of patients. We carefully assess the requirements of each facility and distribute rations accordingly, ensuring that supplies are sufficient and suitable for the patients’ needs.
Particularly challenging have been instances of inclement weather, which can lead to shortages of fresh produce. During such times, it becomes vital to provide alternatives, especially for bedridden patients who may require liquid diets or nasal feeding support. To address this, we have sourced and supplied vegetable and rice porridge, ensuring that even the most vulnerable patients receive adequate nutrition.
This program has gained significant momentum, particularly at the main cancer hospital in Maharagama, where it is operating on a major scale. In addition to providing dry rations, we extend our support to include essential medicines and medical aids. We also facilitate consultations with specialist doctors, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care that addresses both their nutritional and medical needs.
The impacts of our dry ration initiative have been profound. By ensuring a steady supply of dry rations, we have enhanced the nutritional support for patients, significantly improving their recovery and overall health. This initiative also reduces the financial burden on families, allowing them to focus on care rather than costs.
Moreover, the program has fostered collaboration between local businesses and healthcare providers, creating a network of support that enhances the healthcare delivery system. By maintaining a stock of dry rations, hospitals are better prepared for emergencies, ensuring continuous nutrition even during crises.
Our holistic approach integrates nutritional support with medical care, promoting better health outcomes and patient satisfaction. Additionally, this initiative raises awareness about the importance of nutrition in healthcare, fostering a culture of wellness that extends into the community.
Through these efforts, we aim to bridge the gap in healthcare provision, ensuring that patients have access to the nourishment and support they require for recovery. As we continue this initiative, we remain committed to fostering partnerships within the community and adapting to the evolving needs of our healthcare system. Together, we can create a more supportive and resilient environment for all Sri Lankans, particularly those facing health challenges.
In Sri Lanka, a nation where native medicine is deeply embedded in the culture, the reliance on herbal remedies has been a tradition passed down through generations. For many, these natural treatments are the first line of defense against illness, with Western medicine often seen as a last resort. The practice of cultivating medicinal herbs in small home gardens or on a commercial scale underscores the community’s commitment to holistic health.
Our geographical proximity to India, particularly the Gujarat region known as the birthplace of Ayurveda, further enriches our access to ancient medicinal knowledge. Historically, Sri Lankans have utilized a wide range of herbs, often consumed in their raw form or prepared with oils extracted from leaves, for various health benefits. A local saying aptly encapsulates this philosophy: “Except for grass, all other plants are herbs and can be used for medicinal purposes.” Recent scientific findings have even recognized the nutritional value of grass, which is typically reserved for livestock.
As the COVID-19 pandemic began to unfold in late 2019, native doctors swiftly mobilized to prepare antiviral remedies using everyday herbs. Remarkably, Sri Lanka experienced one of the lowest death rates from the virus, and the number of reported cases remained relatively low, partly due to the widespread distribution of these herbal medicines free of charge to the population.
In the 1960s, a collaborative effort among non-aligned nations led to the establishment of the Bandaranayake International Ayurvedic Research Centre in Maharagama, Sri Lanka. This center has been instrumental in advancing Ayurvedic practices and addressing chronic diseases through ongoing research and development.
In response to the pandemic, our charity project, Bandu SL, has focused on supporting vulnerable communities, particularly in rural areas. Collaborating with the government and NGOs, we have prioritized educating the public about COVID-19 prevention measures, assisting with medical supplies, and facilitating regular testing.
We also recognized the need for direct support, providing cooked meals and dry rations to families in need. In more extreme situations, we allocated funds for essential purchases and organized online classes by equipping students with computers and mobile phones, enabling them to continue their education remotely.
The impact of our initiatives extends beyond immediate relief. We have been working tirelessly to foster community resilience and self-sufficiency. Through workshops and educational programs, we teach families how to cultivate their own medicinal herbs and implement preventative health measures at home. This empowerment not only enhances their health but also strengthens community bonds as they share knowledge and resources.
Additionally, we have launched a community health awareness campaign, focusing on the importance of nutrition, hygiene, and mental well-being during the pandemic. Recognizing that health is multidimensional, we have incorporated mental health support into our programs, offering counseling sessions and creating safe spaces for individuals to share their experiences.
As we look toward the future, our vision for Bandu SL is to expand our reach and impact. We aim to establish a sustainable model that not only addresses immediate needs but also invests in long-term health and education solutions. By partnering with local farmers and herbalists, we plan to create a network that promotes the cultivation and use of native herbs, ensuring that our communities remain healthy and resilient.
This journey has reinforced our commitment to help others and has inspired the foundation of Bandu SL. Together, we strive to uplift our communities, fostering resilience and hope in challenging times. Our mission is to continue this vital work, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need for health and education. Through collaboration, compassion, and a deep respect for our rich medicinal heritage, we believe that we can build a brighter, healthier future for all.
