Exploring the Depths of Sri Lanka’s Marine Heritage: Beach Cleaning

As part of our broader commitment to environmental sustainability, our organization has expanded its focus to ocean conservation, recognizing the critical importance of preserving marine ecosystems for future generations. Oceans cover over 70% of our planet, and their health is essential for regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, and providing livelihoods for millions of people. Our ocean-related initiatives aim to address pressing environmental issues such as marine pollution, habitat destruction, and the need for more sustainable fishing practices. These efforts are vital in mitigating the challenges facing our oceans, and we continue to work closely with local communities, governments, and global organizations to protect and restore these invaluable resources.

In February 2025, our organization launched the Trinco Beach Cleaning Project, a large-scale initiative focused on cleaning and restoring one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful coastal areas. Trincomalee, known for its pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, has been severely impacted by plastic pollution and waste accumulation. Through this project, we brought together local volunteers, environmental activists, and community leaders to remove trash, educate the public on sustainable waste management, and restore the natural beauty of the coastline. The cleaning efforts helped to remove tons of plastic and other waste, which not only improved the area’s natural aesthetics but also made it more inviting for both locals and tourists. By clearing debris from the shorelines, we reduced the risk of marine creatures getting entangled or consuming harmful waste, thereby promoting a healthier ecosystem. The initiative also served as a platform to raise awareness about ocean pollution and the importance of responsible waste disposal, particularly in coastal areas. Engaging local communities in this project fostered a sense of responsibility and ownership over environmental conservation, encouraging long-term sustainable practices. Through such hands-on initiatives, we aim to contribute meaningfully to ocean conservation while empowering local communities to become active participants in preserving the environment for future generations.

Reviving Sri Lanka’s Green Cover: Tree Plantation

Sri Lanka has historically been blessed with a rich tapestry of forests, covering nearly 24% of its land. However, over the past few decades, this has gradually diminished to about 18% due to industrial expansion and a lack of awareness regarding the intrinsic value of trees. Our organization has recognized the urgent need to act and has undertaken significant efforts to educate the community—particularly school children—about the importance of trees, which we call “oxygen factories.”

Greening Our Roads

In collaboration with key government departments, particularly the Road Development Authority, our charity has launched a tree planting initiative in September 2024 aimed at enhancing the green spaces along road reservations. By planting valuable and sustainable tree species, we are not only beautifying our roadsides but also contributing to environmental conservation, improving air quality, and fostering biodiversity. This project reflects our commitment to creating a greener, healthier future for our communities.
